Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County

The Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County is a private non-profit law firm providing civil legal services since 1959 to low-income individuals, families, seniors, adults, teens and children in San Mateo County.  Legal Aid’s mission is to help vulnerable and disadvantaged people improve their lives through equal access to justice. Core programs address legal needs identified as most important to our constituency through periodic surveys of the client population and community agencies. Legal Aid provides individual representation, community education, systemic advocacy  and strategic collaborative approaches to address legal issues and resolve problems in important areas of basic need including access to housing and healthcare, special education and disability rights, and domestic violence/family law matters.

Legal Aid has received numerous awards for excellence in the delivery of legal services and has been recognized as an indispensable part of the safety net for low-income residents in the community.  Legal Aid has also established successful pro bono programs involving over 300 private attorneys in order to leverage our limited resources.  Last year the Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County assisted over 2800 families in finding solutions to their legal issues.  The median family income was less than $15,000 a year.
